Record numbers of jazz students from all over the world joined us at Jazz Camp, Jazz Institute, Giant Steps Day Camp, and the new Piano Intensive this summer! We’re already planning our in-person, on-campus jazz immersion programs again in 2024.
Our summer jazz immersion programs are held on the beautiful campus of Stanford University. With classrooms, performance venues, food, and dormitories all in close proximity, SJW becomes a self-contained jazz village in which students stay focused on their jazz studies and interact easily and often with our great faculty and artists. Facilitating musical interaction between generations of jazz musicians is central to the mission of the Stanford Jazz Workshop, and the excellent and safe facilities of the Braun Music Center help make this possible.
Giant Steps Day Camp is for middle school students and for kids who will be entering middle school in the Fall. Giant Steps Day Camp provides a five-day long introduction to jazz styles and improvisation, and it also offers daily master classes in technique for instrumentalists and vocalists. The program begins a 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m., with optional after-camp jam sessions and activities.
Jazz Camp is for students from 12 to 17 years of age. Focused on combo performance and improvisation, the Jazz Camp curriculum provides thorough training in jazz theory, ear training, and instrumental and vocal techniques. Our Jazz Camp Package program combines the two weeks of Jazz Camp into a continuous 13-day immersion in jazz instruction.
Designed for adults 18 and over, Jazz Institute brings many of the world’s greatest jazz musicians together to form a residential community of astonishing creativity. Students study with the top jazz artists in the world during the day, and see them perform at the Stanford Jazz Festival at night. Jam sessions abound. Jazz Institute is open to students age 17 and under by audition.
Jazz Piano Intensive for Adults is a new program that gives pianists the experience they crave the most: Playing in a trio setting with professional bassists and drummers! With coaching from the renowned SJW jazz piano faculty, your skills will improve rapidly, and you’ll have an unforgettable experience. For adults 21 and over, by audition only.
If you can’t make it to Stanford next summer, you can still work with the amazing SJW faculty artists online at Jazz Camp Online. With up to four live online sessions each day with some of the greatest jazz artists, fun group online activities, access to SJW’s library of on-demand jazz content, and an incredible virtual ensemble component, Jazz Camp Online will help you get to the next level of mastery on your instrument or voice, and improve your jazz performance and improvisation.
