Flute and Saxophone – Jazz Camp Week 1, Jazz Camp Week 2, Jazz Camp Package
Extremely popular among jazz campers for her highly positive attitude, Lynn Speakman grew up in the Midwest, where her fascination with music began at an early age. Before she could read music, she enjoyed picking out melodies from television and movies on the household piano. She began studying piano at the age of 6 and switched to flute at the age of 12. In high school, Lynn picked up the alto saxophone so that she could play in the jazz band. While she majored at first in classical flute performance in college, jazz saxophone (and flute) would eventually become her passion. Lynn graduated from Michigan State University with bachelor of music degrees in Music Performance and Jazz Studies (2006) and a master of music degree in Jazz Studies (2008).
Lynn’s career has given her the opportunity to meet and perform with many great musicians. She has performed at the Detroit International Jazz Festival with bands such as the Gerald Wilson Orchestra and the Christian McBride Big Band and has given concerts at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and the Village Vanguard, as well venues in Germany, France, and Japan. Lynn has had the privilege of sharing the stage with many great jazz musicians including Rodney Whitaker, Wycliffe Gordon, Wynton Marsalis, Gerald Wilson, Christian McBride, Geoffrey Keezer, Ron Blake, Stefon Harris, Jon Faddis, and the late, great Frank Morgan, among others.
For the past 7 years, Lynn lived in New York City, where she was a member of DIVA Jazz Orchestra, played frequently with the Solomon Douglas Swingtet, and subbed in bands such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, and Christian McBride Big Band. She recently moved to Pittsburgh, PA and is enjoying getting to know the musical scene there.
Lynn is also a gifted educator and is passionate about teaching. While in NYC, she taught with SJW mainstay Victor Lin at Calhoun School for 6 years as well as with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Middle School Jazz Academy. This will be her 10th summer teaching at SJW! She also enjoys composing, arranging, engraving, and transcribing music for a wide variety of clients as well as for her students and her own bands. Lynn hopes to entertain and inspire many more audiences and students with her gift of music.
