Middle school musicians are special, and our faculty and staff are chosen because of their long experience addressing the curricular and developmental needs of middle school students. SJW offers programs all through the year for middle school students. During the summer, the Giant Steps Day Camp is for middle school students and for kids who will be entering middle school in the Fall. Giant Steps Day Camp provides a five-day long introduction to jazz styles and improvisation, and it also offers daily master classes in technique for instrumentalists and vocalists. The program begins a 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m., with optional after school jam sessions and activities.
During the school year, the Giant Steps Big Band offers regional big band classes and performances in different locations around the San Francisco Bay Area. Open by audition to talented middle school students, the bands are led by jazz educators with track records of notable success teaching at the middle school level. Support faculty address the curricular needs of individual instruments, and additional instruction and practice is provided via online practice tools.
Our summer immersion programs, Jazz Camp and the Jazz Camp Package, are also open to middle school students who are ready for an overnight camp experience and who are comfortable being in an environment with older students who are in high school.
