The Lurie Challenge
SJW is experiencing record student enrollment, and therefore record requests for financial assistance. In 2025-26, thanks to an extraordinary one-time fundraising effort, we said yes for the first time to virtually all requests from students who demonstrate need, potential, and motivation.
Nevertheless, a gap has emerged between what we typically raise and what we need in order to continue to say yes. Our friends Connie and Bob Lurie have offered a $125,000 matching gift incentive. If we meet this match by fall 2027, we can fill the gap for up to six years.
To meet the match, we seek:
- New gifts: If you make a gift to SJW for the first time, the entire amount applies to the match.
- Increased gifts: If you made a gift in 2025-26 and make a greater gift now, the difference applies to the match.
- Returning gifts: If you last made a gift before 2025, support us once again and the entire amount applies to the match.
After just three months, we are 31% to our goal!

The Fine Print
SJW is a grassroots nonprofit unaffiliated with Stanford University. We put more than 80 cents of every donated dollar directly into programs for young people and performances. The remaining pennies fund management, infrastructure, and sustainability.
