At the heart of the Stanford Jazz Workshop are immersive jazz programs designed to inspire and develop musicians of all levels.
Jazz Camp offers two week-long summer sessions for students aged 12 to 17, with a curriculum focused on combo performance, improvisation, jazz theory, ear training, and instrumental or vocal techniques. Each night, students experience world-class performances at the Stanford Jazz Festival, featuring many of their instructors. About half of the students stay in Stanford dorms, while others commute. For those seeking a deeper experience, our new Jazz Camp Package combines both weeks into a continuous 13-day jazz immersion.
Jazz Institute is an unparalleled opportunity for advanced high school musicians and musicians 18 and older to study with some of the world’s greatest jazz artists. By day, students learn from jazz masters; by night, they see them perform at the Stanford Jazz Festival. With abundant jam sessions and a vibrant community, Jazz Institute is open to students by audition. Our new Advanced Package extends this experience by combining the second week of Jazz Camp with the Jazz Institute, creating an intensive 13-day program for talented students aged 12 to 17 (by audition).
For those looking to jumpstart their jazz journey, the Miles Ahead Improv Sessions offer a hands-on introduction to jazz theory and improvisation. Open to adults and advanced high school students, this five-week course equips participants with the tools to begin improvising over nearly any jazz composition or standard.
