The Stanford Jazz Workshop’s main focus is offering jazz immersion programs for students in this age range. Running for two week-long sessions in the summer, Jazz Camp is focused on combo performance and improvisation, and the Jazz Camp curriculum provides thorough training in jazz theory, ear training, and instrumental and vocal techniques. Each night, Jazz Camp students get to see performances at the Stanford Jazz Festival, where many of their teachers perform. About half of the students stay in Stanford dorms during Jazz Camp, and half stay off-campus. Our new Jazz Camp Package program combines the two weeks of Jazz Camp into a continuous 13-day immersion in jazz instruction.
Designed for adults 18 and over, Jazz Institute brings many of the world’s greatest jazz musicians together to form a residential community of astonishing creativity. Students study with the top jazz artists in the world during the day, and see them perform at the Stanford Jazz Festival at night. Jam sessions abound. Jazz Institute is open to students age 17 and under by audition.
Our new Advanced Package combines the second week of Jazz Camp with the Jazz Institute to create a very powerful, 13-day jazz immersion experience for students aged 12 to 17 by audition.
Offered at the start of summer, our Miles Ahead Improv Sessions are hands-on classes that give adults and talented high school students the fundamentals of jazz theory and improvisation. By the end of the five weekly sessions, students will have the tools they need to be able to begin improvising over nearly any jazz composition or jazz standard they encounter.
