A widely influential artist who decided to dial back touring in order to focus on teaching, vibraphonist/composer Stefon Harris has profoundly shaped a generation of jazz artists.
The contemporary jazz scene is in the midst of an unprecedented wave of vibraphone innovation, and few artists deserve more credit for that evolution than Stefon Harris. Since emerging in the late 1990s with a series of highly acclaimed Blue Note recordings, the four-time GRAMMY-nominated vibraphonist, composer, and New York native has become one of the instrument’s defining voices, mentoring many of today’s brightest young vibraphonists, including Sasha Berliner.
Now celebrating the 20th anniversary of his groundbreaking ensemble Blackout, Harris returns with the upcoming Legacy Dances, his twelfth release as a leader. The album delivers an unapologetically authentic blend of modern jazz rooted in African rhythms, R&B, and electronic soul, building on the acclaimed Sonic Creed (2018) and Sonic Creed Volume Two (2024). Together, these recordings reflect Harris’s expansive artistic vision, exploring history, identity, joy, and resilience through a contemporary musical lens.
An ambitious composer, startlingly eloquent improviser, and visionary bandleader, Harris continues to expand and deepen the Blackout musical family. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience one of jazz’s most influential and innovative ensembles live as Stefon Harris & Blackout bring their electrifying sound to the Stanford Jazz Festival.
