First Annual SJW School Jazz Festival, April 14, 2023
Come to Stanford University on Friday, April 14 for a free, day-long celebration of big band jazz in the San Francisco Bay Area!
The first annual SJW School Jazz Festival will feature performances by 16 school jazz bands, a noon concert by SJW faculty artists, and an evening concert with the Stanford Jazz Orchestra with special guest soloist Francisco Torres — all open to the public.
Participating school jazz bands will get a private clinic following their performances from one of the top jazz educators in California. Our adjudicators for the SJW School Jazz Festival are Gary Pratt, Professor Emeritus California State University, Northridge; David Beatty from Azusa Pacific University; Patrick Langham from the University of the Pacific; Erik Jekabson from the California Jazz Conservatory; and Kristen Strom from Santa Clara University.
Participating musicians will also be able to attend clinics on jazz improvisation and big band rhythm section playing, led by Francisco Torres and SJW faculty artists. Performances begin at 8 AM in Dinkelspiel Auditorium. The evening concert begins at 7:30 PM in Dinkelspiel Auditorium.
The SJW School Jazz Festival is directed by Mike Galisatus, director of the Stanford Jazz Orchestra.
The Festival begins at 8:00 a.m., with the final school band performance at 6:00 p.m.
