SJW cancels summer programs

In compliance with directives from Stanford University regarding cancellation of summer camps and programs, closures, and heeding the recommendations of state and local health officials, we have come to the painful decision to cancel our summer jazz immersion programs. This includes Giant Steps Day Camp, Jazz Camp, and Jazz Institute, which were scheduled to be held on the campus of Stanford University, between July 6 and 31. The annual Stanford Jazz Festival has been cancelled as well.

We know this news will be as much of a disappointment to our students and faculty as it is to all of us here at Stanford Jazz Workshop, as we’ve been looking forward to immersing ourselves into music this summer with all of our friends. We will of course miss the joy, inspiration and revitalization that comes with the direct connection to our jazz community, though our primary concern now is the health and safety of our students and their families, our faculty, and our staff. We also want to ensure that we as a community do our part to halt the spread of the highly infectious COVID-19 disease.

Tuition for canceled programs will be refunded

Registered participants will be receiving a full refund of thier current account balance, including deposits.  Many will receive refunds directly to their credit card account. IN some cases, refunds will be send as checks. The small but dedicated SJW staff is working remotely while sheltering at home, and we’re managing our operations as best we can. We’ll process refunds as soon as possible, but it will take several weeks to process all refunds. Thanks in advance for your patience.

Online learning

We are exploring options with our faculty to provide online learning programs this summer, such as individual and small group lessons, master classes, theory and musicianship lessons. We will let you know in the weeks ahead as these ideas are developed.

An alternative that can help SJW faculty keep working

Alternatively, participants can lock in 2020 pricing for the 2021 summer programs — and keep our talented SJW faculty working — by leaving their deposits or balances in their SJW accounts. This will also guarantee participants a spot in the program of their choice for 2021. If they decide later to cancel, we will provide a full refund with no cancellation fees through December 31, 2020. After that, normal cancelation fees will apply. If they would like to leave their deposit and reserve their spot for 2021, we will honor those requests.

How you can help

Cancelling all summer programs, while necessary, means that SJW will lose more than 90% of our annual revenue, and will be devastating for our small organization. Many have asked how they can help. To do so, please make a contribution through our website by clicking here:
