About the Sylvia Cuenca Group

“Cuenca is one of the finest drum accompanists on the scene today.” —Allaboutjazz.com

“Cuenca is a dynamo.” —Jazziz

A brilliant drummer with a list of credits that reads like a Who’s Who of jazz luminaries — including long stints in the bands of Joe Henderson and Clark Terry — Sylvia Cuenca has local roots that are as deep as SJW’s. One of the early Jazz Camp attendees, Sylvia also became an indispensable member of the faculty and staff, shaping the programs that still thrive and inspire young musicians today. A meeting with Joe Henderson in the South Bay set her on a trajectory of jazz drumming that has taken her around the globe. Composition is yet another of her strong suits, and this show will feature originals by Sylvia and by her bandmates as well.
