Steven Lugerner’s SLUGish Ensemble
A brave and soaring jazz adventure.
If there’s an adventurous bone in your body you will relate to the novel and fascinating musical world of Steven Lugerner. A practitioner of every instrument with a reed in it, from lurking bass clarinet to soaring soprano sax explorations, Steven Lugerner composes music that marries the minimalist sonorities of artists such as John Adams and Phillip Glass to the rich, urban jazz textures of New York composer/bandleaders such as Maria Schneider and John Hollenbeck. Steven, a Stanford Jazz Workshop alumnus, is committedly bicoastal and leverages the most creative music resources in both his Brooklyn and SF communities including tonight’s special guest drummer Allison Miller. You’ll be sure to witness what Sound On Sound describes as “ . . . volatile, cathartic flare-ups and Art Ensemble-like interplay. There’s ebb, flow, and bracing contrasts . . . ” And with musicians like these, probably some blowout swinging moments.
Personnel: Steven Lugerner, bass clarinet and saxophones; Chris Sullivan, tenor saxophone; Cory Wright, baritone saxophone; Erik Jekabson, trumpet; Danny Lubin-Laden, trombone; Ari Chersky, guitar; Malcolm Campbell, piano; Matthew Wohl, bass; Allison Miller, drums
