A 90th birthday tribute to one of the giants of jazz.

Somethin’ Else: A Tribute to Cannonball

A 90th birthday tribute to one of the giants of jazz.

When Julian “Cannonball” Adderley released Somthin’ Else 60 years ago, he secured his position in the top echelon of jazz. Cannonball was already riding high as a member of Miles Davis’ band, and this influential album — along with the three other major label recordings he released in 1958 — helped establish Cannonball as a leader and an artist with his own style, distinct from the legions of Charlie Parker imitators. In what would have been his 90th year, we’re proud to present a celebration of Cannonball’s life and music, with a top-flight band featuring by two Cannonball experts, saxophonist Henry Solomon — SJW alum and former SJW Mentor Fellow — and drummer Roy McCurdy, who was a member of Cannonball’s band from 1965 – 1975, when the master alto saxophonist passed away.

Personnel:
Henry Solomon, saxophone
Erik Jekabson, trumpet
Roy McCurdy, drums
Paul Cornish, piano
Kanoa Mendenhall, bass
