SJW JAZZ CAMP ONLINE COURSES

  • Full day: Four 40-minute live sessions each day from 10 AM – 6 PM Pacific Standard Time
  • Half day: Two 40-minute live sessions each day from 2 PM – 6 PM Pacific Standard Time

Masterclass
In your masterclass, you’ll be part of a small group of students who play your instrument or who sing, and you’ll all have a similar level of experience playing jazz. In a live Zoom session with a faculty member who is a master of your instrument, you’ll work on technique, tone, improvisation, jazz styles, transcriptions of famous jazz solos, and repertoire. These sessions will be archived so all participants can access them anytime. You’ll definitely come away with things to practice, so plan to spend some time in the practice room each day!

Musicianship
In this exciting live Zoom session, you’ll work with a variety of faculty members to attune your ear to the sounds and language of jazz, and you’ll apply it to your instrument. You’ll be with a mix of instrumental or vocal students who will be at your level of experience. You’ll learn some great jazz vocabulary and boost your confidence playing music by ear, which will take your improvisation skills to the next level. These sessions will be archived so all participants can access them anytime.

Jazz Theory (for Full Day participants only)
This live Zoom class will expand your knowledge of the theory, mechanics, and harmony of jazz, so you’ll be able to identify any sound you hear, understand how it functions in a composition or solo, and re-create it yourself in the context of a jazz performance or composition. You’ll be grouped with students at your level of experience with jazz theory. These sessions will be archived so full-time participants can access them anytime.

Special Presentations (for Full Day participants only)
Full Day participants can choose to participate in any of the live Zoom sessions offered in this time period. A wide range of topics will be offered each day, including composition, how to learn tunes and memorize jazz repertoire, grooves for the rhythm section, jazz history through listening, artist profiles, faculty panel discussions and much more. Some of these will be archived so full-time participants can access them anytime. You’ll get a complete schedule before SJW Jazz Camp Online begins on July 6th.

Optional Morning Meeting and Orientation
Join Camp Director Steven Lugerner every morning at 9:00 AM for a relaxed live Zoom class in which Steven and other faculty members will describe what’s coming up in classes that day, and offer suggestions about how to get the most out of the day’s programs. Steven always has lots of fun jazz videos to share, too, so we encourage you to join the Morning Meeting each day. If you can’t join us at 9:00 AM don’t worry; Morning Meetings will be archived so any SJW Jazz Camp Online student can tune in whenever it’s convenient.

Optional Practice Parties
Are you looking for some extra guidance and camaraderie while you practice? SJW Practice Parties are optional live Zoom sessions that will help you to develop great practice plans. You can join the class and practice in the comfort of your home between classes while feeling the community vibe and shared love of jazz with your peers. You can ask our faculty artists questions or seek guidance on how to practice something — or you can just listen. Our faculty artists will show you how to create a practice plan for a particular song, scale, technique, or anything else. Practice Parties will occur throughout the day.

Optional Instrumental Office Hours
Now you decide the topic yourself! Drop in to an instrumental office hour session with a faculty member who plays your instrument, and ask them any question you wish about jazz. You can ask them about the fundamentals of jazz improvisation, or ask them what it’s like to go on a world tour or record an album in a professional studio, or how to make ends meet as a jazz musician — this is your time to ask anything you want to know. These will occur throughout the day.

Private Lessons
This is your live Zoom one-on-one with a faculty member who plays your instrument or who sings. They’ll listen to you play and offer you valuable suggestions and insight into how you can improve the fastest, and sound your best. Your private lesson will be scheduled in advance to occur at a time other than your required Masterclass, Musicianship class, Theory class, or Special Presentation time. You can have an additional private lesson for $55, or two additional private lessons for $100, depending on faculty availability.
