ne of the leading jazz artists in Australia, Sylvan “Schmoe” Elhay brings years of experience as a woodwind virtuoso, composer, arranger, and educator to his faculty position this summer at SJW.

During the 1960s and 1970s Schmoe played clarinet in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. At the same time he was playing flute and saxophone in jazz, funk, and rock bands. His jazz ensemble Schmoe & Co plays concerts, club gigs, and radio and TV broadcasts, and records regularly. Over more than four decades Schmoe has performed throughout Australia and in and around the Bay Area. For three decades he taught jazz at The University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music. He has scored, produced and performed music soundtracks for several short films and modern dance works for ballet companies.

A strong advocate for jazz, Schmoe was a founding member of the SA Jazz Action Society, was a founding member of the SA Jazz Coordination Program and served for more than three decades as a member of the Board of Jazz SA Inc. He served two terms on the Music Board of the Australia Council, the Australian Federal Government’s art funding agency. Schmoe was a member of the founding Board and is now an Honorary Life Member of the Music Council of Australia. In 2012 he was honoured for fifty years service to Jazz with a tribute by SA Jazz Archive.
