Saturday Workshops

Come and spend a Saturday or two improving your jazz playing at SJW! Our Saturday Workshops are a great way to have fun with jazz and to see what it’s like at Jazz Camp, even if your summer is packed with activities.

Saturday Workshops offer you a choice of classes and activities throughout the day, taught by SJW’s legendary jazz artists and educators. In the evening, Saturday Workshop participants get to attend the Stanford Jazz Festival, where they see some of the greatest artists in jazz perform.

Designed for young jazz players who want to build on their recent experience at Jazz Camp or to increase their knowledge of jazz, Saturday Workshop classes focus on expanding participants experience with particular topics in jazz, such as improvisation, career management, composition, arranging, specific styles of jazz, practice techniques, and many other subjects.

Saturday Workshop activities also include jam sessions, special presentations by visiting artists, and discussions about how to get the most out of Jazz Camp or Jazz Institute. Some course titles from recent Saturday Workshops include:

• Composition: Improvising in slow motion
• Spontaneous creation: improvising dance music
• Active listening and harmonic analysis through the history of Jazz
• Exploring the music of Thelonious Monk
• Combo Action / Reaction: Conversations in jazz
• Write and compose what you mean
• Composition: History and influence
• Private practice vs. collective practice
• Rhythmic interaction
• Collective composition
• Professional opportunities in the music industry
• How to learn by ear

All Saturday events are mandatory for Jazz Camp Package or Advanced Package dorm residents, and optional (but recommended) for commuters.
