Vocals – Jazz Camp Week 1
atie Linza is a well-known Bay Area vocal jazz artist and an in-demand educator, and she joins the Jazz Camp Vocal program for the first time this year.
She currently serves as Performing Arts Department Chair at Pinewood School in Los Altos, California, where she directs the high school choirs, the Take Note a cappella ensemble, directs high school theatre, and teaches music theory. She has served as Music Director at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church in Oakland, taught Power Vocals at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, and acted as Artistic Music Director of the Oakland Jazz Choir. Katie has been blessed with many years of music teaching, directing, and performance experience. She’s worked as music director, conductor, piano accompanist, and arranger for various jazz, pop, classical choral, a cappella, and theatrical groups. She has also sung and recorded with many bands in a variety of genres, and performed in many musical theater productions.
Katie holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from San Jose State University with an emphasis in Improvised Music Studies, including jazz, pop/rock/gospel, as well as Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, South Indian Classical, and other world music traditions. She also holds a degree in Professional Music from vocal jazz guru Phil Mattson’s School for Music Vocations in Iowa, and an M.A. in Drama from San Francisco State University. In addition to her extensive work as a musician, Katie is an actor and has trained and performed with various theatre companies in the Bay Area and has worked on various film and commercial projects.
