Guitar – Jazz Institute, Advanced Package
JW is thrilled to welcome guitarist Jeff Parker to the faculty for 2019. Jeff’s stellar reputation as an improviser and guitar visionary has been forged by his work in a variety of genres, from his longtime membership in the indie rock band Tortoise to his collaborations with up-and-coming drummer Mckaya McCraven, and work with such great jazz artists as Joshua Redman, Dave Douglas, Peter Erskine, Vijay Iyer, Brian Blade, Jason Moran, Joey DeFrancesco, and others.
His openness to experimentation and exploration has led to opportunities for Jeff to create some of the most intriguing new music in circulation. In fact, his latest album, The New Breed, garnered a lot of attention from NPR and Pitchfork for the R&B and minimalist vibe that underpins its adventurous jazz intent.
Based in Los Angles, Jeff produces, arranges, and composes, in addition to performing, and collaborates with a wide range of artists such as Bennie Maupin, Nicole Mitchell, Yo La Tengo, Nels Cline, and Meshell Ndegeocello.
Jeff has released several critically-acclaimed albums as a leader, including Like-Coping (2003), The Relatives (2005), Bright Light In Winter (2012), and his two most recent releases, The New Breed (2016), and Slight Freedom (2016), both of which topped many critics’ year-end “Best Of” lists, including The New York Times.
“Parker, probably best known as a member of the post-rock band Tortoise, has absorbed so many styles and worked in so many situations that he really comes across as an individual with vast roots.” —JazzTimes
