li Maliwan is a California Bay Area native who grew up in Marin County. He attended The Stanford Jazz Workshop on scholarship at the age of 14 and met two teachers that would continue to mentor him throughout his career. He decided to study music full time and attended Nova Independent Study in lieu of traditional high school. In 2004 Eli was awarded a full financial aid based scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory and studied with Gary Bartz, Robin Eubanks, and Paul Cohen. After attending Oberlin, Eli moved to Portland, OR and continued studying jazz at Portland State University with Darrell Grant, Alan Jones, and Scott Hall. In 2011 Eli attended the California Institute of the Arts for a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies. At Cal Arts Eli studied with Paul Novros and Alfonso Johnson, and even toured with Johnson’s Weather Report tribute band. Eli currently teaches at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, East Bay Home Music, and teaches privately. He is also heavily involved with a plethora of musical projects in the Bay Area including hip hop jazz group Sueños and his own electric jazz group – Rice Kings.
