Charles Altura

harles Altura is one of the greats of modern jazz guitar. He’s also an alumnus, and you can study with him this summer at Jazz Institute!

He’s famous for his unique blend of effortless lyricism and rich, atmospheric sound. He’s recently played with Tom Harrell, Terence Blanchard, Ambrose Akinmusire, Dayna Stephens, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Tigran Hamasyan. He is as comfortable hanging with Chick Corea’s fusion pyrotechnics as he is with Ambrose Akinmusire’s reflective post-bop, and a the same time, Charles always seems to be on the road—most recently with Terrence Blanchard, where he has learned a lot about on to lead a band.

Charles expresses that his music shares the concept that he is trying to blur the lines between the compositions and the improvising—mostly the idea is just keeping it compositional and melodic.
