e at SJW are excited to welcome Amirtha Kidambi to Jazz Camp Week 2. Amirtha will direct special afternoon workshops on free improvisation and experimental music, in what some call avant-jazz.

Amirtha is the creative force behind the Elder Ones, featuring rising New York artists Matt Nelson, Nick Dunston and Max Jaffe. Elder Ones’ Holy Science (2016) and From Untruth (2019, both on Northern Spy) have received critical praise from The New York Times, Pitchfork, Wire Magazine, and DownBeat.

Currently, she’s in Mary Halvorson’s Code Girl, a duo with Lea Bertucci, and improvising vocal quartet Lines of Light. As an improviser, she has played with luminaries including Darius Jones, Matana Roberts, Tyshawn Sorey, Maria Grand, Brandon Lopez, Ingrid Laubrock, Ava Mendoza, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Trevor Dunn. She has also worked closely with veteran composer-performers Robert Ashley, Muhal Richard Abrams, and William Parker.

A committed educator, Amirtha is on the faculty of the New School in New York City.
