SJW In-Person Ensembles

It’s time to play!

SJW is excited to offer a return to in person music instruction!

We have two in-person jazz education programs to be held on the beautiful campus of Menlo College in Atherton, California: Combo Camp and Evening Combos (optional for Jazz Camp Online and Jazz Institute Online). All programs will be in compliance with COVID-19 health and safety requirements as these evolve (see FAQ below).

Students in SJW In-Person Ensembles will work with a single instructor and play together as a small group each day. All combos will perform for each other at the end of the week.

For all vocalists and instrumentalists
Ages 12 to adult

Prerequisite: 12 months of instrumental or vocal experience. No jazz experience required for entry-level combo placement.

SJW Combo Camp

Combo Camp is a five-day program scheduled for three hours per day, with morning or afternoon sessions. You’ll get to play in a small jazz group directed by one of SJW’s great jazz educators.

Note: Combo Camp cannot be taken in the same week concurrently as Jazz Camp Online or Jazz Institute Online. If you wish to have a live combo class during the same week you’re enrolled in Jazz Camp Online or Jazz Institute Online, please sign up for Evening Combos (more info below). You may enroll in both Combo Camp and Jazz Camp or Institute Online in separate weeks.

Who is Combo Camp for?

  • Young musicians with no jazz experience who are curious about exploring jazz.
  • School jazz band players who just can’t wait to play live in a jazz band again.
  • Any musician who wants to improve their jazz playing, at any level.

Combo Camp is all about playing! In Combo Camp, you’ll play great jazz tunes in a small group directed by one of our acclaimed faculty artists. You’ll learn tons about improvising techniques and approaches to jazz playing as you dive into each song. At the end of the week, COVID-19 protocols permitting, you’ll perform a showcase with your combo.

  • One three-hour playing session per day
  • Program times will be either 10:00 am to 1:00 p.m., or 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday though Friday
  • Location: Menlo College, 1000 El Camino Real, Atherton, CA 94027

SJW Evening Combo Option

The Evening Combo Option offers in-person live jazz performance and instruction to students who are enrolled in Jazz Camp Online or Jazz Institute Online. In this fun optional evening program, you’ll play in a small jazz group directed by one of SJW’s amazing jazz educators.

Evening Combo sessions are 90 minutes Monday through Friday, and are held in the evenings after Jazz Camp Online and Jazz Institute Online programs. Enrollment in an online program is required for all Evening Combo participants.

Who is the Evening Combo Option for?

  • Any musician enrolled in Jazz Camp Online or Jazz Institute Online.
  • Musicians who have never tried jazz but who have proficiency singing or on an instrument.
  • Developing young musicians who play in their school jazz bands and want to learn to improvise and solo better.
  • Advanced classical students with a strong command of their voice or instrument, but lack jazz experience.
  • Advanced jazz players who want to improve their improvisation skills while playing with a small group.

You’ll play great music, apply the lessons you learned online that day, and learn important ensemble skills such as collaboration, phrasing, interplay, and creativity.
