Eric Alexander and Harold Mabern
In 1991, The Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition launched tenor prodigy Eric Alexander into the New York jazz stratosphere. The HighNote Records recording artist is in worldwide demand as leader, producer, composer, and sideman. The quartet he brings to SJW this year features similar East Coast high-fliers including drummer Louis Hayes, trombonist Steve Davis, trumpeter Brian Lynch and Eric’s former teacher, piano giant Harold Mabern. The self-taught Mabern performed sideman duties in a jaw-dropping roster of leaders including Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, Lionel Hampton, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, J.J. Jonson, Sonny Rollins, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, and Sarah Vaughan. He tours the world with keyboard-based groups that feature as many as ten pianists. Eric Alexander’s multi-generational team of players promises a night of tremendous power and many surprises.
