Brooklyn-born and Bay Area-raised, Dayna Stephens is a young saxophonist with something to say—and some of the biggest names in jazz are listening. His tone on the tenor is warm and rich, and he can build energy in a solo to dizzying heights with terse, urgent phrasing rather than technical bombast. An alumnus of SJW and the Berkelee College of Music, Dayna also participated in the Thelonious Monk Institute, where he studied and played with artists such as Dave Holland, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and many others. Described by trumpeter Tom Harrell as “a total genius,” Dayna has performed with an impressive list of artists, including Kenny Barron, Carlos Santana, Roy Hargrove, and Stevie Wonder. For this special performance, Dayna is joined onstage by longtime friends Taylor Eigsti and Tootie Heath.
