Stanford Jazz Workshop strives to make jazz accessible through our Youth Scholarship and Financial Aid Fund. In 2014, we distributed over $104,000 in financial aid for underserved youth to attend the Stanford Jazz Workshop, which enabled nearly 90 deserving and talented young jazz musicians to immerse themselves in the study of jazz with some of the leading artists in the world.
We make every effort to assist all applicants who need financial assistance, but we do ask that you read the following policies, restrictions, and guidelines carefully before applying for financial aid.
Tuition. Students who will be between 11 and 17 at the start of the SJW program of their choice can apply for financial aid toward tuition.
Housing. Financial aid toward housing for the Jazz Camp, Jazz Institute, and both 2-week sessions is available for students who will be 14 - 17 when their SJW program begins.
To be considered for financial aid, students must demonstrate financial need, show musical merit, and submit all application materials prior to the deadline of April 1, 2015.
If you are interested in applying for financial aid please fill out the Financial Aid section of the online application when you register. A $100 deposit is required, but will be refunded if a student in unable to attend due to not receiving enough financial assistance.
Following completion of the registration process, an additional Financial Aid Application will be sent to parents of financial aid applicants that must be filled out, signed, and returned to SJW, to be received no later than the deadline of April 1, 2015. The Financial Aid Application consists of the following:
- a personal essay written by the participant
- a letter of recommendation from the participant's band director or instructor
- a signed affirmation that any financial information submitted is correct
In addition to the completed Financial Aid Application, we request a copy of the first page of the most recent tax return of the participant's family.
Detailed instructions on how to complete the financial aid application emailed to you within 72 hours of receiving the automatically generated confirmation email sent once the registration application is submitted online.
May 15 Evaluation Extension
In addition to completing and submitting your financial aid materials, all students attending our summer jazz camp program(s) will need to submit an evaluation recording in order to determine class placement.
All students applying for financial aid will be given an extended evaluation deadline of May 15. Financial aid announcements will be delivered via email by May 1 to all those who submitted a completed application by April 1. The final day to submit your evaluation recording for placement is May 15. Evaluation recording submissions are welcome and encouraged prior to May 15.
Stanford Jazz Workshop has a limited number of instruments available for rent. If you need to rent an instrument, please let us know as soon as possible by writing to email@example.com. For financial aid recipients, SJW waives the $50 instrument usage fee, but still requires a deposit of $500, which will just be a hold on your credit card, and not a charge. The hold will be removed once the instrument has been returned in its original condition.
