Our fun summer day program is perfect for young musicians who are curious about jazz as well as those who have had some jazz experience. Taught by instructors who specialize in middle school education, Giant Steps Day Camp is packed with musical activities that develop creativity, emphasize good instrumental and vocal skills, and build a solid foundation in jazz styles — an excellent preparation for attending Jazz Camp in the future, or for playing in our Giant Steps Big Band, or for playing in a school big band or combo! The program runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. with time for enjoyable outdoor activities on the beautiful campus of Stanford University. You can add the optional lunch plan and early drop-off/late pick-up services when you register.

The Giant Steps Day Camp schedule includes a variety of activities that emphasize the fundamentals of good musicianship while introducing concepts of jazz phrasing, articulation, and improvisation. Daily masterclasses give students instruction on their own instruments or voice type, focusing on fundamentals such as good tone and technique. Two ensemble periods alternate between Jazz Combo and Big Band, so each student gets to grow into their role as a soloist as well as experiencing the excitement of large ensemble jazz. Special classes for vocalists and string instruments introduce those students to the world of jazz that awaits them.

A typical day at the Giant Steps Day Camp goes like this:

●       9:00 All-camp meeting

●       9:20 Masterclass and music theory

●       10:15 Ensemble period, either small or large band

●       11:45 Lunch and outdoor activities

●       12:45 Faculty band concert

●       1:30 Ensemble period

●       3:00 End of the day
