SJW Faculty at Cantor Arts Museum: "Metaphysics of Notation"

Rob KohlerA unique merging of mediums is in progress at Cantor Art Museum on the Stanford campus. The score of a composition by Stanford University's Associate Professor of Composition & Theory, Mark Applebaum, entitled "Metaphysics of Notation" is on display. Adjunct to the presentation is a series of performances of the score by various musical guests. Coming up this Friday the 31st July from noon until 1pm, Stanford Jazz Workshop's own Jazz Camp Combo Coordinator, bassist and all-around lovable guy Rob Kohler will interpret the work in a acoustic duo format with bassist Josh Crumbly, our 2006 Merit Scholarship winner (who guested last Sunday with Taylor Eigsti and his Free Agency project). Read a press release about the concept on the Cantor site. We urge you to stop by and experience this multi-dimensional amalgam of forms! On August 14, SJW Faculty Director, tenor saxophonist Patrick Wolff will perform the score with Dave Mihaly on percussion. Pictured: Rob Kohler.

Matt WilsonThe Stanford Jazz Workshop’s Jazz Mentors are a group of young musicians selected from around the country to teach at the Workshop’s summer education programs. They earn valuable teaching experience, get an opportunity to work and play with the rest of the artists in the Workshop’s faculty, and inspire the whole community with their energy, talent, and dedication. Alumni of the program have gone on to begin outstanding careers in jazz performance and education, and this year’s Mentors are an amazingly talented and accomplished bunch, with skills, experience, and musicianship beyond their years. Teaching together during the day and jamming until late at night, these young artists play with creativity and up-to-the-minute hipness. Audiences get a chance to hear tomorrow’s jazz stars today in this special performance, which features all-star drummer Matt Wilson. The Mentors represent the future of jazz, and it’s clear that the future is in good hands.

Madeline EastmanVocalist Madeline Eastman approaches her music with the same mindset as a jazz instrumentalist. Some singers dwell in the spotlight, delivering studied renditions of classic jazz songs, supported by backing bands of musicians who get perhaps one or two perfunctory solos per set, but Eastman’s concept places much more emphasis on group interaction and exploration. When she takes the stage, she is simply one member of her band; the real magic of her performances comes from the collective interplay and constant thrill of discovery. Her focus on improvisation and spontaneity ensure that no two performances are ever the same. Madeline has been a star of the Bay Area jazz scene for years, while gaining exposure and acclaim both nationally and internationally. Her performance at this year’s Stanford Jazz Festival is an exciting chance to hear her with a dream lineup of musicians, including her long-time pianist Randy Porter, bass phenomenon Larry Grenadier, and renowned drummer Gregory Hutchinson. Special guest Terell Stafford is a trumpeter of amazing range and inventiveness, whose improvisational bravado and dynamic stage presence enliven any performance.

Jimmy HeathThe Heath Brothers—saxophonist Jimmy, drummer Albert (better known as “Tootie”), and the late bassist Percy—are without question one of the most influential families in jazz. As a young bebop alto player in the 1940s, Jimmy was nicknamed “Little Bird,” but this flattering comparison to Charlie Parker doesn’t do justice to the innovative and unique style Jimmy has developed during his career. Now primarily a tenor player, he has built upon the innovations of the bebop pioneers and carried them into the modern era with style and originality. Jimmy was named an NEA Jazz Master in 2003. Drummer Tootie has recorded and performed with a who’s-who of jazz giants, including John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, and Herbie Hancock. Recently, Tootie has expanded the role of the jazz drummer with his unique “Whole Drum Truth” project, in which he performs with an ensemble made up entirely of great jazz percussionists. Although no bassist can fill the shoes of Percy, who passed on in 2005 at age 81, David Wong is an up-and-coming young player who has absorbed a great deal of jazz wisdom, playing with artists like Roy Haynes and Wynton Marsalis. With his sensitive accompaniment and swinging energy, Jeb Patton is the Heath Brothers’ pianist of choice.

The Making of a Jazz Master

Passing through the ranks of an established bandleader’s group used to be a rite of passage for young players on the way to leading their own bands. The best education was earned on the bandstand from leaders like Art Blakey, Miles Davis, or Horace Silver. As jazz has entered schools and universities a different form of education has emerged. Young musicians can now graduate from schools as extremely accomplished players, but too often they miss out on the wisdom gained by experience working with a veteran leader. Brainchild of saxophonist Andrew Speight and Dr. Jeffrey Babcock, Executive Director of the International Center for the Arts at San Francisco State University, the Generations Jazz Project aims to help revive the tradition of ensemble-based mentorship by giving young players total access to an all-star ensemble of established artists. The Stanford Jazz Workshop’s formative years were blessed by the participation of Stan Getz, an undisputed giant of the tenor saxophone. Getz freely shared his knowledge and wisdom with the Workshop’s community and inspired them with his artistry. A true master of melody, he always played straight from the heart with feeling and spontaneity. As Stan once quipped when a student sought his advice on some esoteric matter of harmonic theory, “It’s the mood, not the mode.” From the stylish sensuality of his pioneering bossa nova recordings to the joyous intensity of his bebop playing, emotion, honesty, and personal expression were always at the forefront of his music. Bassist Larry Grenadier provides the direct connection to Stan@Stanford: he was a Stanford student during Getz’s Stanford years, and the two musicians got to know each other well and interact both on and off the bandstand. A star-studded lineup of Jazz Workshop faculty including guitarist Peter Bernstein, drummer Gregory Hutchinson, and many special guests will pay homage to Getz’s enduring legacy of creativity, individualism, and heartfelt communication.

Mulgrew MillerPianist Mulgrew Miller is one of the premier contemporary performers on his instrument and an important voice in the jazz piano pantheon. His peers cite him as one of the most sought-after pianists in modern jazz, due to his originality, versatility, and deep knowledge of many styles and traditions. Miller is a dazzling soloist whose style fuses the swinging energy of classic bebop with the adventurous sophistication of modern jazz. As an accompanist he inspires his fellow musicians, adapting sensitively to their ideas while inspiring them with his own distinct sound. Born and raised in the Mississippi delta, Miller was surrounded by blues and gospel as a child. Early gigs with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Betty Carter, and many others shaped his unique musical style. He has recorded more than a dozen albums as a leader, and his credits as a sideman are extensive. Miller’s Stanford Jazz Festival performance features a trio with bassist Ray Drummond and a tag-team of outstanding drummers: hard-bop pioneer Louis Hayes and rising star Gregory Hutchinson.
