Stanford Jazz Festival
A truly exceptional line-up of artists graced the Festival this season. Veterans such as Kenny Burrell, Barry Harris, Richard Davis and Charles McPherson inspired & delighted, while heavyweights Terence Blanchard, Joshua Redman, Delfeayo Marsalis and John Scofield (with his Agosto Trio) lent star power. The Festival had a particularly contemporary flavor this year, as Jason Moran headlined his interpretation of Andrew Hill's Smokestack recording and modern jazz trio Fly (Mark Turner, Larry Grenadier & Jeff Ballard) joined forces with Josh Redman on closing night. Performances by bright young players such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Taylor Eigsti, Dayna Stephens & Julian Lage - all of whom are Workshop alumni - proved to be some of the Festival's most popular and innovative, building upon the Workshop's status as talent incubator.
