Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan, James Moody, Yusef Lateef, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Eddie Harris, Sonny Stitt, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Stan Getz, and Buddy Rich - the list of jazz artists with whom Kenny Barron has had long associations reads like a “Who's Who” of jazz. Kenny's commitment to jazz education is just as deep, and for decades he was one of the faculty behind the famous jazz program at Rutgers University.
Returning to SJW for the fifth time since 1989, Kenny has been touring the world lately, with notable week-long residencies at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola and the Village Vanguard in New York City. Since his last stint on the SJW faculty in 2007, he has released The Traveler, which features vocals by Grady Tate, Ann Hampton Calloway, and SJW faculty member Gretchen Parlato, as well as instrumental contributions by Lionel Loueké, Francisco Mela, and Kiyoshi Kitagawa.
In addition to his pianistic prowess, Kenny's skills as a composer and arranger have contributed to his nine Grammy nominations, which include nominations for Best Jazz Album and Best Solo Performance for People Time, Sambao, Freefall, Spirit Song, Night and the City, and Wanton Spirit.
