Evening Summer Classes offer musicians ages 12 and above a chance to develop their skills in a four-week series of classes held Monday and Tuesday evenings on the Stanford campus. Classes are taught by some of the Bay Area’s top jazz artists and educators, and include beginning and intermediate Jazz Piano, Jazz Theory, and the popular Jazz Camp Warm-up classes.
For Evening Summer Classes, Stanford Jazz Workshop welcomes musicians who have little or no experience playing jazz or playing in a small combo, provided they have studied their instrument for at least 18 months.
Beginning Jazz Piano
A hands-on introduction to the basics of jazz piano playing, taught in a group piano classroom. Open to pianists who already have basic proficiency, typically with 3 to 5 years of classical experience, this class offers a supportive and encouraging environment to those who want to learn how to direct their skills to jazz.
Intermediate Jazz Piano
This hands-on group piano class is for students with a year or two of jazz piano experience who want to take the next steps in learning chord voicings and approaches to improvisation. The class will begin with a review of ii-V-I in major and progress into minor, altered chords, etc.
Beginning Jazz Skills
A hands-on introduction to the skills needed for jazz improvisation. Open to all instruments. Prerequisite: basic proficiency on your instrument.
Beginning Theory
Provides an introduction to jazz music theory and ear training.
Jazz Camp Warm-Up
These classes are designed for players coming to SJW’s Jazz Camp or Residency. The classes combine elements of ear training and music theory with improvisational techniques to get your skills honed. Musicians will get ideas for directed practicing in order to improve their jazz playing and begin to take their playing to the next level. These classes are not designed as “combo” sessions and are not available to drummers. Players not attending Jazz Camp or Residency are also welcome to enroll.
