* "Beginning" students are defined as having little or no experience improvising or playing jazz in a small combo but should have a basic proficiency on their instrument.

Beginning Jazz Piano: A hands-on introduction to the basics of jazz piano playing, taught in a group piano classroom. Open to pianists who already have basic proficiency, typically with 3 to 5 years of classical experience, this class offers a supportive and encouraging environment to those who want to learn how to direct their skills to jazz.  This class meets Mondays, June 14 to July 12 from 6:45 pm-8:15 pm.  Fee: $150.  Instructor: Frank Sumares

Intermediate Jazz Piano: This hands-on group piano class is for students with a year or two of jazz piano experience who want to take the next steps in learning chord voicings and approaches to improvisation. The class will begin with a review of ii-V-I in major and progress into minor, altered chords, etc. This class meets Mondays, June 14 to July 12 from 8:30 pm-10 pm.  Fee: $150.  Instructor: Frank Sumares

Beginning Jazz Skills: A hands-on introduction to the skills needed for jazz improvisation. Open to all instruments. Prerequisite: basic proficiency on your instrument. This class meets Wednesdays, June 16 to July 14 from 8:30 pm-10 pm.  Fee: $150.  Instructor: Frank Sumares

Beginning Theory: Provides an introduction to jazz music theory and ear training. This class meets Wednesdays, June 16 to July 14, from 6:45 pm to 8:15.  Fee: $150. Instructor: Frank Sumares

Jazz Camp Warm Up: These classes are designed for players coming to SJW’s Jazz Camp or Residency and combine elements of ear training and music theory with improvisational techniques in order to “get the wheels turning.”  Musicians will get ideas for directed practicing in order to improve their jazz playing and begin to “take it to the next level.”  These classes are not designed as “combo” sessions and are not available to drummers. Players not attending Jazz Camp or Residency are also welcome to enroll. Meets Wednesdays, June 16 to July 14.  Fee: $175.  Instructor: Wayne Wallace

Section 1 (8:30 pm-10 pm): for advanced beginner and low intermediate players; will concentrate on increasing familiarity with the blues form and related harmony.

Section 2 (6:45 pm-8:15 pm): for intermediate/advanced players; will concentrate on “making the changes” and becoming more comfortable with standard jazz tunes.

If you’re thinking of taking more than one beginning evening summer class, we suggest combining Beginning Jazz Skills with Beginning Theory, Beginning Jazz Skills with Beginning Jazz Piano, or Beginning Theory with Jazz Camp Warmup Sec 1.
