Lately, though, I’ve been struck by how valuable the program is to the musicians who teach and perform here each summer. Many of them view their time at SJW as an opportunity to recharge and be inspired by new interactions and collaborations, energizing their artistic development. Creating a supportive community that encourages musical growth is at the heart of SJW’s mission. It’s a testament to our success in this endeavor that the seeds of so many fruitful and exciting collaborations are planted and nurtured at our program, including important musical partnerships between saxophonists Steve Coleman and Yosvany Terry, who met at Stanford in 1995, and bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Bill Stewart, who met as students and became one of the great rhythm section duos in contemporary jazz. The inspiration that these musicians feel at Stanford also comes from interaction with students. Teaching jazz forces a musician not only to focus on the fundamentals of musicianship, but also to reflect on the question, “what does jazz mean to me?” Working with talented students, inspiring colleagues, and appreciative listeners in an atmosphere of respect, creativity, and discovery is an enriching experience for everyone at SJW. By attending our Stanford Jazz Festival performances, you are contributing to this uniquely nurturing community and to the future of jazz. Thank you, and welcome to our 2010 season! |
For 39 years, Stanford Jazz Workshop has been a conduit through which jazz music has reached many people. One of the satisfactions of being able to stick with one thing for a long time is seeing the impact we’ve had on students and listeners – particularly on the young. Over the years, it’s been incredibly rewarding to see kids get their first exposure to jazz at our festival concerts, progress through our education programs, and lead richer lives because of their strong connection to this music. Many have even gone on to become professional jazz musicians.
